Soccer's history in America is littered with overly ambitious owners, poor investments and old players. In 1960s America's Soccer League was established. Although it spent as a major league, attendances weren't reflective of that. Indoor soccer began to take over in the 1970s. The resulting MISL folded in 1992, but its legacy remains firmly rooted in the current American soccer pyramid.
Major League Soccer
Major League Soccer in the USA has a history that is somewhat obscure despite the American League of Professional Football's successes. Founded in 1996, it consisted of 10 teams and was split into two conferences: the Eastern and Western. At first, the sport was overshadowed by the popularity of Football and Basketball in the US, and took several years before it gained widespread popularity. The league now has over 300 participating teams.
