Esparza made her debut in 2012 when she signed with Invicta FC. Invicta FC2 saw Sarah Schneider lose to Esparza in 2012. Esparza got on the back of Schneider early with a heel hook and then attacked the Argentine. She briefly attempted to apply a rear naked choke, but she was unable to control her opponent.

In November, she is expected to defend her title against former champ Zhang Weili. Recent updates on social media were posted by her regarding her fight camp.
Esparza was taken to the hospital after the accident. She was later diagnosed with nerve damage. Although her hospital bill was more than $30,000, Esparza committed to fighting. InvictaFC7 card saw her fight again against Maya Hamasaki the next year. Claudia Gadelha defeated her later, but Gadelha suffered from stomach problems.
She won two title bouts against Rose Namajunas
Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza are both former women's lightweight champions and have faced each other in two title fights. Namajunas won and kept the title in April. Although the fight was close, neither fighter managed to land a knockout. Esparza won the fight 48 to 47.
Esparza had a record of 3-3 in 29 prior to this title fight. However, her win over Virna Jandiroba on April 2019 opened the door for a five-fight winning streak. She beat Yan Xiaonan at a COVID Quiet UFC APEX in Las Vegas in eight minutes. In June 2019, she defended her title again by knockout in the first round.
