Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza are both former women's lightweight champions and have faced each other in two title fights. Namajunas won and kept the title in April. Although the fight was close, neither fighter managed to land a knockout. Esparza won the fight 48 to 47.

Esparza had a record of 3-3 in 29 prior to this title fight. However, her win over Virna Jandiroba on April 2019 opened the door for a five-fight winning streak. She beat Yan Xiaonan at a COVID Quiet UFC APEX in Las Vegas in eight minutes. In June 2019, she defended her title again by knockout in the first round.
