Emily Sonnett is one the most successful players in the United States women’s soccer league. She was a First-Team All-American twice and the Most Outstanding Defensive player at the 2014 NCAA Championships. In 2015, she was awarded the ACC Defensive player of the year. She was also the ESPNW Soccer Players of the Year. She graduated from UVA and was then eligible to enter the NWSL draft. She was the semifinalist of the 2016 NWSL Championship and scored her first pro-goal against the Western New York Flash. She was awarded her first senior-level cap by the U.S., and she was also an alternate at Rio Olympics.


Canada's energy

The Canada team was full of energy during the match against the U.S. At the half, both teams were tied at 1-0. Canada's energy level was high throughout the first half of the match and continued to be lively as the game progressed. The USA had more energy from the bench but Canada's team worked hard and set the pace. It was disjointed at times which was perfect.

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick set a new record, breaking a 969-minute old record. She was able to take the penalty kick even with a cast on one arm. The strike was her first international goal. Sonnett scored the goal in 34 minutes. Ashley Sanchez was also on the scoresheet in the 35th minute.

Canada's second half energy

The US Women's National Team vs Canada match saw some USWNT attacking energy in second half. They started to push forward with several half chances, including one from Lindsey Horan that was off-target. Canada's defense stood firm against the US pressure and held their ground.
