Esparza was first prominent after she signed with Invicta FC in 2012. She defeated Sarah Schneider at Invicta FC 2 in 2012. Esparza got on the back of Schneider early with a heel hook and then attacked the Argentine. She eventually resisted the urge to use a back-naked choke and controlled her opponent's head.

Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza are both former women's lightweight champions and have faced each other in two title fights. Namajunas reclaimed the title in November and won it back in April. The bout was close through, but neither fighter got a knockout. Official scorecards showed Esparza winning 48 to 47.
