Coach Tina Estrada and her San Jose State women's soccer team are on a roll. We will be discussing the recent success of the Spartans and Estrada’s journey. We also discuss the university's mental healthcare resources for student-athletes.

Estrada's success

Hanson's pedigree is similar to Estrada, who was appointed assistant coach at San Jose State's women's soccer team in 2017. Estrada was an All American college soccer player and was also part of the U.S. Under-17 national team. Estrada, a Santa Clara forward who was three times all-WCC, also participated in four NCAA tournaments. In 2015, Estrada was named Assistant Coach of Year by the NSCAA.

Estrada hails from Fremont in California but currently resides in Walnut Creek. Estrada has twice won the Mountain West Tournament and was named National Assistant coach of the year. She has coached Spartans to two NCAA Tournaments. Her teams have won five consecutive conference tournaments.

SJSU's recent success

A number of players can be credited for SJSU's recent success with women's soccer. Most notably Dorthe Hoppius won the MVP award for the team, but she will not be back with the Spartans during the 2018 season. Jamilecxth Becerra, a sophomore, was also named Mountain West Newcomer-of-the Year. She scored seven goals, five of which were game-winning. Darriell Franklin was also named to the All-MW second team and the MW defensive player-of-the-year.

This success has also been attributed to new facilities for the Spartans. Spartan Beach and Spartan Baseball Practice Facility are recent additions. In addition to these two facilities the Spartans plan to open their Spartan Athletics Center in the next year.

Coach Tina Estrada's career

Estrada is the interim head coaching of the San Jose State women’s football team. She was previously an Associate Head Coach and Spartans assistant for the past four years. Lauren Hanson resigned after eight years. She was replaced by her on February 1. Hanson had been the school's most successful coach.

Estrada was an outstanding Santa Clara University player and was a great assistant and head coach for many programs. Now, she is poised to become one of the most promising young head coaches in division one women's soccer. Estrada has a strong teaching ability, is extremely communicative, and has excellent leadership skills.

SJSU offers mental health resources to student-athletes

SJSU student-athletes can access many mental health services. Many resources are targeted at athletes' needs. For example, Support for Sport helps athletes find mental health referrals and talk about mental health issues with teammates. LGBTQ+ Support offers stories and perspectives about being gay in sport. Also helpful are ULIFELINE's college mental health resources. Counseling Services also has a student-athlete self-help resource page. Health and Wellness Education provides a website that offers information on a range of mental health topics.

SJSU's Counseling and Psychological Services provides quality services to students. This department examines an individual's whole self and provides tools and guidance to help them become productive members. The department is located on the third level of the Student Wellness Center and offers counseling for a wide variety of issues.
